Herbstia condyliata (J.C. Fabricius, 1787)

Herbstia condyliata, the rugose spider crab, is an exlusively marine species in the family Epialtidae. It is characterized by its triangular to circular carapax which can reach a length of 4.5 cm and bears several spines along its lateral edge. Notably, the legs of this species are more than twice as long as the diameter of the carapax. While resting, it keeps its claw-bearing front legs in a position pelow its body. Its body is colored vividly red and often covered to a varying degree in sponges.


Herbstia condyliata is a common inhabitant of caves. The species has a large geographic range including the Mediterranean Sea as well as large parts of the Eastern Atlantic Ocean.
